One Step at a Time
"...'Nor by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty." (Zechariah 4:6) It has already been three months since I took up the position of General Secretary, and my main takeaway was learning how to "follow God one step at a time". Last June, I made the decision to not continue serving as Senior Pastor after my term was due, hoping to "half-retire" β to speak at pulpits and conduct workshops at different churches; however, God had a new task for me to learn, and after getting confirmation from Him, I started to serve as the General Secretary of PCS. The first week into the job, I could tell it was no "fun" job: There were lots of meetings to attend (about one meeting every two days), lots of emails to send, decisions to make, and English to speak (I am Chinese-educated), and more... I joked with the staff, saying, "I may not even last 100 days!" To summarise on how I have "pulled through" the past three months, it has to be "following God, one step at a time". I thank God for His mercy, as He spoke to me often during my daily quiet time, giving me comfort and encouragement; I thank God for His blessings, providing great co-workers in the Synod Office to guide and assist me. Reflecting on this past few months, I got reminded of an important lesson β perhaps it was due to my past 36 years of experience, that I would try to "depend" on my own experience and methods to continue serving; but facing a "new" environment and needs, I can only "follow God one step at a time". Just like how it is written in Zechariah 4:6: "...'Nor by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty." One step at a time, only one step at a time. This is the way the Lord will lead you, one step at a time. Take that one step carefully, walk that one step prayerfully, this is the way of victory, one step at a time. (Youth Hymns (5,6,7,8 Combined) 73) This song that I have sung since young once again resounded in heart. Yes, let us all learn together: to follow God, one step at a time!
