48th Session of Synod AGM Held in Hybrid at True Way PC
The 48th Session of the Synod Annual General Meeting was held on 21st March at True Way Presbyterian Church. Due to the ongoing pandemic, it was organised in a hybrid manner, similar to the previous year. Delegates were to submit their proxy forms and questions via online means in advance, and attended the meeting over Zoom, which was livestreamed from the hall of the hosting church, where the speakers of the night gathered to conduct the meeting. A total of 131 delegates joined the meeting virtually. The meeting commenced with a worship session led by True Way Presbyterian Church's senior pastor Rev Dr Paul Siah and Pr Grace Wee, followed by a devotion sharing by Synod Moderator Rt Rev Dr Teoh Boo Cheow, who shared on Philippians 1:15-27. It was followed by the confirmation of quorum and the presentation of gifts to our respected retired ministers, including Rev Tan Tiong Ann (Jubilee Church), Rev Yu Chien Chung (Bethany PC), Rev Tan Mui Ho (Sion Church Bedok) and Rev Goh Hock Moi (Providence PC). This year, we also showed our appreciation to two Synod staff, Sister Christina Lee and Sister Vicky Ho, for their dedication to the Synod Office for the past five years.
A remembrance service was also held to commemorate some of our late elders, who dedicated their lives in the service and ministry of the Lord in their various capacities, namely Elder Andrew Tan Ching Hai (Carmel PC), Elder Francis Lim (Covenant PC), Elder Quah Kah Moey (Bethel PC), Elder Tseng Yow Hoe (Glory PC) and Elder Yeow Chee Hong (Jubilee PC). The election of the 49th and 50th Session of the Synod Executive Committee took place this year as well. We look forward to working together with the new committee members:
The AGM also saw the approval of the Telok Kurau Land Development Proposal, which authorises the Synod Exco to undertake all actions in relation to the Hub Project, including but not limited^ to granting an investor a lease of up to 103 years to construct buildings, integrate and/or subdivide the land (if required) to facilitate the lease, and commission a study to optimize the stewardship of the above financial proceeds for the development of the PCS' missional vision, which will be presented to the 2023 Synod AGM. The 2023 Synod AGM will take into account the findings and conclusions of the study to determine how the financial proceeds will be used for God's mission and glory. Rev Dr Leonard Wee, representing the Theological Review and Response Committee (TRRC), also gave a presentation on JDDJ and recommendation to the Synod with regards to the acceptance of the declaration and renewal of WCRC membership. In 2046, the lease for Trinity Theological College will come to an end. To continue supporting the theological education of the next generation of church leaders, a proposal has been put up: Each of the governing churches will be co-sharing a part of the cost, in consideration of their congregation size, voting rights in the Board of Governance and number of graduates per denomination over a number of years from 2046. As such, the amount the Synod is estimated to contribute is approximately 5.2 million. Synod Treasurer Elder Tan Ching Eng put forward the appeal to member churches to consider this in their church’s annual budget planning. The Synod has also set up a task force for this project. The 48th Session of AGM closed with an ending prayer by Vice Moderator Rev Vincent Lee, and a thank you message to all who made this year's AGM possible by the Synod Moderator. The Synod Office would also like to show our appreciation to all staff and co-workers from True Way PC (both Chinese and English congregation), volunteers, as well as the staff from the Synod Office and Presbyteries, for all the help and support, and for showing the spirit of being a family in Christ.
