Discover our Rich Heritage and Enhance the Unity in Faith
By Rev. Kim Tan (AICS Executive Secretary)
Dec 2014

The Synod of the Presbyterian Church in Singapore announced the establishment of the Asian Institute of Calvin Studies (AICS) at the 40th Annual General meeting on 18 March 2014.

It is indeed very significant to set up this denominational research institution at this juncture. As the churches register with the government independently, from now on, the bonding between the churches would be totally reliant on the unity in the Spirit. Understanding the theology of our forefather, John Calvin, will enhance the unity in our faith. The setting up of the research institute provides an opportunity for the pastors, elders and the youths to learn and study hermeneutics, theology, homiletic, pastoring and the governing of John Calvin, in addition to the tradition and history of our denomination.

The lectures, conducted in Chinese and English for the elders and deacons this year, were well received. It was very encouraging to see our brothers and sisters enthusiastically coming to the class after a day’s hard work. To see them gathered together for the training sessions was indeed a pleasing and pleasant sight. The courses were highly commended and some of the participants were amazed by the rich heritage that were waiting to be discovered, received and passed on from our ancestors.

To serve the brothers and sisters of our churches, the Institute hopes to provide courses and seminars in order to nurture talents for our denomination. The upcoming events for 2015 have been listed. Besides these, AICS will be conducting more lectures and courses which will be announced in the future.
